An award winnig garden with tailor made floating steeping stones and vegetated front yard.

A statement piece and an award-winning design, Auburn Garden received the 2021 Nic van Diemen Design Award. This timeless landscape effortlessly connects the feature entry, which lushed with drift planting, and side passage to the beautifully terraced rear garden.

Layers of greenery, succinct landscape lighting and high-quality finishes including Bluestone, Corten steel, Blue Mountain Ledgestone and warm timber elements, create a harmonious and sensory landscape designed for the clients to enjoy for many years to come.

The centrepiece floating steps are adorned with delicate Dichondra argenta and two handsome flowering deciduous trees, Lagerstromia indica ‘Natchez’, provide shade and privacy to the frontage. Mixed perennials including the flowering Iris ‘Yellow Flag’ and Anigozanthos ‘Frosty Yellow’ provide softness and texture.

At the top of the naturally sloping garden bed are sculpted Buxus and Westringia fruticose balls, anchoring the rest of the drift plantings to the steps.

The use of greyish bluestone pavings and stepping stones work in harmony with the evergreen vegetations and the steel edging.

The front garden captures attention through clean and functional level changes by a sequence of floating Bluestone steps. The concrete formwork supporting each individual step was carefully shaped to create a sense of visual lightness between each rise. Recesses were also incorporated into the formwork to accommodate concealed LED strip lighting beneath each floating step.

Our Landscape design Auburn Garden takes inspiration from ‘Adorned by Nature’ guidelines which promotes lushness in planting textures. A large retaining wall in Blue Mountain Ledgestone with a Corten steel retaining wrap-around allowed for a level walkway against the house frontage.

Striking white egg-shaped pots provide a beautiful contrast at the porch adjacent to the top of the steps. From the Bluestone-clad porch, a series of Bluestone steppers surrounded by green synthetic lawn continues around the side of the residence, forming the side pathway.

Side walkway is decorated with metal screens for climbing greenery, interlocked with hardwood timber columns.

This walkway transitions onto a warm composite timber deck beneath a simple yet carefully detailed hardwood timber pergola, providing shelter, privacy and support for fragrant climbing plants. Within the rear garden, generously spaced Syzygium ‘Lilly Pilly’ screening sits behind delicate cascades of grey-green Dichondra ‘Silver Falls’ spilling over the retaining walls.

Broad-leaf Monstera ‘Dwarf Monstera’ and Philodendron ‘Dwarf Philodendron’ create a lush backdrop to the entertaining space.Climbing plants trained across walls and vertical mesh structures complete the landscape, bringing the different areas together and creating an intimate garden retreat.
